FAQ's

What happens at my first session?

In your first session with the counselor, you will get the chance to ask questions, talk about some of your challenges, and explore your strengths and what areas you would like to improve.

In subsequent sessions, you will work with your therapist to explore your thoughts, feelings and beliefs. You wil be able to work in collaboration to create goals and work through different forms of therapy. Each counsellor has their own unique way of approaching therapy. We provide you with concrete tools that will assist in optimizing your mental health.

What is your cancellation policy?

We require 48 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule appointments. We accept emails as notice for cancellation. We charge full rate for no shows and late cancellations.

How can I prepare for my session?

To start, you’ll make the best of your sessions if you show up on time, be open and honest, and are consistent in attending your sessions. How long are the sessions?

Counseling sessions are typically 50-minutes. We are able to provide extended sessions of 75 and 90 minute sessions and these can be arranged directly with your counsellor.

You can book directly with one of our counsellors by visiting our online booking system Jane. To view our availability please go to our calendar.

Is counselling confidential?

Yes. What you share with one of our therapists will be held in the strictest confidence. However, it is important that you know there are three exceptions to confidentiality required by law:

  • If there is suspected child abuse or neglect we are required to report this to the appropriate authorities immediately.
  • If you are at a serious threat of harm to yourself or another person, we will make every effort to work with you to ensure your and others safety. If needed we are required to report this to the appropriate authorities.
  • To comply with a legal order such as a subpoena, or if the disclosure is otherwise required or authorized by the law.

What is the difference between counsellors, therapists, psychiatrists, and psychologists?

The terms “counsellor”, “psychotherapist”, and “therapist” are typically used interchangeably. These terms refer to people who provide counselling services.

In BC, counselling can be provided by an RCSW, RSW, RCC, Psychologist or Psychiatrist.

A Registered Clinical Social Worker is qualified to assess, diagnose and treat mental disorders based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. A RCSW must complete 3000 hours of post masters or doctoral supervised clinical social work experience and a clinical designation exam. They are highly trained mental health professionals who play a crucial role in promoting the well-being and providing therapeutic support to individuals, couples, families, and groups. They are licensed and regulated by the BC College of Social Workers.

A Registered Social Worker practicing in British Columbia must meet specific education and training requirements. They must possess a bachelor’s (BSW), master’s (MSW), or doctoral degree (DSW) in social work from a recognized post-secondary institution. This formal training equips RSWs with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively assess and treat mental health issues. They are licensed and regulated by the BC College of Social Workers

Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCCs) are a type of counsellor commonly found in British Columbia. They are professionals who hold a master’s degree in counselling psychology or a related field, and are regulated by the British Columbia Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC).

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who also has psychology training and prescribes medication. Their services are the only mental health service covered by MSP. They are licensed and regulated by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC.

A psychologist has a doctorate degree (PdD or PsyD) and does not prescribe medication. Psychologists in British Columbia are licensed and regulated by the College of Psychologists of British Columbia. They are trained in a range of therapeutic modalities and provide counselling.

Do you offer direct billing?

We do offer direct billing for a limited number of insurance companies. Many major insurance providers cover counselling services, but not all accept direct billing. We will provide an invoice after payment which you can submit for reimbursement. However, please consult with your insurance provider to confirm whether or not your benefits plan covers counselling/psychotherapy provided by Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCC) or Registered Social Workers (RSW). We are able to direct bill to ICBC, FNHA, CVAP, Canadian Armed Forces, RCMP, Veterans Affairs, and Interim Federal Health Program.

Is counselling a taxable benefit?

Clinical services provided by a Registered Clinical Social Worker can be claimed as a medical expense on income tax returns. In addition, the Canada Revenue Agency recognizes Social Work as a health profession. Therefore, all clinical services provided by a RCSW are GST exempt.
